On March 18, 2021, 20-year-old Kaleigh Nelson of Carpentersville, Illinois was arrested by the U.S. Secret Service for allegedly threatening to shoot former President Donald Trump and his son Barron. According to a criminal complaint obtained by the Associated Press, Nelson posted on social media that she wanted to “assassinate” Trump and that she was “buying a gun to shoot him and his oldest son.” Nelson was charged with one count of transmitting a threat in interstate commerce. If convicted, Nelson could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
