Biden campaign co-chair declares president ‘Democratic nominee’ before single vote cast

It is premature for any person to declare a Democratic nominee before any primary votes are cast. Joe Biden’s campaign co-chair, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, is reported to have declared Joe Biden the Democratic presidential nominee in a virtual fundraiser in March 2020, before the first primary vote.

While Garcetti was undoubtedly expressing his confidence in Biden as a candidate, the contributions and pledges of support shared during the fundraiser do not constitute a formal nomination to be a candidate. Democratic voters will ultimately decide who they want as the Democratic nominee in the 2020 presidential election.
