A number of Republican legislators in New Mexico are considering introducing articles of impeachment against Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham in response to her recent executive order making it impossible for certain firearms to be sold in the state.
State Sen. Cliff Pirtle (R) called Grisham “rogue” and said she was going beyond her powers by ordering a ban on firearms sale that is not provided for in state law.
“I support the Second Amendment, so I think it’s a critical issue,” Pirtle told the Washington Examiner. “We have to step in and I’m going to do whatever I can to defend the Second Amendment.”
Pirtle was joined by a number of other GOP legislators in the state who argued that Grisham was overstepping her bounds and vowed to take the necessary steps to remove her from office if impeachment proceedings fail.
“Governor Grisham is disrespecting the Constitution,” state Rep. Rod Montoya (R) told the newspaper. “We have to impeach her. We can’t let her get away with this.”
