California Democratic Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager has said that Gavin Newsom’s plan to appoint Rep. Karen Bass to replace retiring Sen. Dianne Feinstein is “insulting” to Black women. Kamlager has been vocal in her criticism of the governor’s decision to bypass Black women such as Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon. Kamlager argued that Newsom should have done more research to consider African American women to fill the prominent vacancy. She believes that the governor should have utilized his own Executive Appointments Office “to research the untapped resources” of qualified Black women.
