President Donald Trump’s claim that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) turned down 10,000 National Guard troops ahead of the violence at the Capitol on Jan. 6 has been repeatedly debunked. In a tweet posted shortly after the riot took place, Trump accused Pelosi of having “denied me the 10,000 Federal Agents requested.” However, the Washington Post fact-checker reported that there is no evidence that such a request was ever made, and that the Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security both said that they had received no request for additional troops. Furthermore, the Washington Post quoted Defense Department officials as having said that it would have been impossible to deploy that many troops so quickly.
It is therefore clear that Pelosi is not responsible for the violence at the US Capitol on Jan. 6, and the claim that she turned down 10,000 troops is false.
