Lauren Boebert’s migrant misinformation trail winds back to Canada 2006

Lauren Boebert’s troubling trail of misinformation on immigration can be traced back to 2006, when she was an outspoken opponent of Canada’s then-proposed immigration bill. The bill in question, titled the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, sought to create a faster, more efficient way for foreigners to enter Canada, giving them access to a greater variety of jobs and opportunities. Boebert was a vocal critic of the plan, writing on her blog that the proposed law was an “invitation for illegal aliens to cross into Canada.” Boebert also argued that the proposed law would increase the costs of social services, echoing similar arguments from conservative immigration critics. In the years since, Boebert has continued to spread misinformation about immigration, as recently as 2020 when she blasted President Joe Biden’s proposed immigration overhaul and accused him of endangering America’s sovereignty.
