Republican candidates embrace Reagan. But he’d be out of step in Trump’s GOP.

Ronald Reagan was one of the most influential presidents in American history and remains a beloved figure for many in the Republican Party. His legacy continues to inform and inspire modern Republican policies. However, Reagan’s signature vision of conservatism – which included a strong commitment to international alliances, free market policies, and fiscal restraint – is often at odds with the nationalist and populist policies popular among many members of President Donald Trump’s base. As a result, while Reagan’s legacy is revered by most in the GOP, his more traditional brand of Republicanism is not as prevalent in the post-Trump party.
