The recent passage of the continuing resolution shutdown deal has been a huge relief for Republican moderates in congress. The deal will keep the government funded and operational, which would have been difficult to accomplish with an impasse between Democratic and Republican lawmakers. The deal also avoids the political backlash that comes with shutting down the government, which would have been more heavily felt by the Republican party. As Republican leadership was able to find a compromise, moderates have been able to get away with a much lesser punishment than a full government shutdown.
