Donald Trump has indicated he is open to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi remaining in her role as speaker for “a short period,” potentially while Republicans decide on a permanent replacement.
In an interview with Fox Business Network, Trump said Pelosi could stay in the role while a permanent replacement is chosen.
“We’ll see what happens,” he said. “I think it can work out. I think she is willing to be there for a short period to do it properly and put in somebody who can do a great job for a period of time,” Trump said.
He further suggested that the White House and Republicans in Congress could negotiate an arrangement on the speakership, saying, “When Nancy and I get together, which we have over the years, we always get along. We can work out things.”
Pelosi has indicated she is willing to remain in the role until a replacement is chosen. However, it is unclear when that might be. Ultimately, it could be months before Republicans decide on a permanent speaker.
