House speaker race starts again for Republicans after ousting Jordan

The race to become the next Republican speaker of the House of Representatives will begin again in the wake of the ousting of Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy-backer Rep. Jim Jordan as the top contender for the post. On Feb. 6, McCarthy dropped out of the running due to divisions within the Republican caucus, but the internal rift has further intensified since then, with Jordan’s exit opening up the contest to new leadership candidates. The list of possible contenders includes Reps. Mark Meadows, Liz Cheney, Steve Scalise, and others. Rep. McCarthy is expected to remain in his current role and has indicated he will support the eventual choice of speaker.
