Tom Emmer is a Republican congressman from Minnesota’s 6th congressional district, and he is currently serving as the Majority Whip in the House of Representatives. In late September, he announced his candidacy to replace outgoing Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy. He announced his bid with McCarthy’s full endorsement, a strong sign of support from the GOP.
Emmer has served in the House since 2015 and is known for his reliably conservative voting record on issues such as taxes, regulation, and spending. He is a strong supporter of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, and a strong believer in protecting Second Amendment rights. In his own words, he “champion[s] policies that promote limited government, free markets and personal freedom.”
The House of Representatives will soon vote to choose its new leader. If Emmer wins the election, he will become the first Republican Speaker of the House since November 2018, when Paul Ryan left the speakership.
