In a tweet on Monday, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) criticized US policy toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, remarking that it “doesn’t add up.”
Her comments come amid a deepening conflict between the US and Israel over the Prime Minister’s hard-line approach to the Palestinians. President Trump recently blocked the release of $200 million in aid for Palestinians’ development projects, and the US vetoed an effort at the United Nations to condemn Israel’s controversial settlement activities.
In her tweet, Omar wrote, “It’s frustrating to watch our government’s policy toward Netanyahu’s government turn into one-sided revenge instead of a thoughtful approach that brings peace to the region. It doesn’t add up.”
The tweet has since sparked backlash from some pro-Israel voices who saw the comment as a thinly-veiled criticism of the US’s close relationship with Israel.
