Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sharply criticized the Biden administration officials who signed a dissent memo criticizing the U.S.’s decision to not publicly condemn Israel for its military campaign against Hamas.
“It’s a disgrace that once again these diplomats chose to politics and not truth,” Pompeo said in a statement. “Their moral compass is broken. Just as damning is their complete disregard for the citizens of Israel who are enduring hundreds of rocket attacks from Hamas terrorists.”
Pompeo also emphasized that the signatories did not respect American national interests by casting doubt on the trustworthiness of the U.S.’s most important ally in the Middle East.
“We have consistently recognized both Israel’s right to self-defense and the importance of de-escalation,” he said. “We have used quiet and effective diplomacy behind the scenes to try and help bring a cessation to the violence. We will continue to work to this end.”
