Robb Chavies, a former Jacksonville Jaguars employee, was arrested on October 4 in Atlanta, Georgia, for allegedly stealing approximately $22 million from the National Football League team over several years. Authorities say Chavies used the majority of the money for lavish shopping sprees.
Chavies, who worked as the Jaguars’ vice president of finance between 2013 and 2018, was charged with money laundering, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. According to the Department of Justice, Chavies executed a complex scheme to fraudulently charge expensive items to the Jaguars from various vendors. The items purchased included cars and jewelry.
Chavies also allegedly opened a shell corporation and used numerous credit cards belonging to the Jaguars to purchase commodities and other luxury items for himself and his family. Additionally, he is accused of submitting false entries to the team’s books in order to mask the thefts.
The Jaguars filed a civil lawsuit against Chavies in August of 2019, in which the team says it was defrauded of millions of dollars. Authorities were then able to capitalize on the team’s complaint to create a criminal case against Chavies.
If convicted, Chavies could face up to 20 years in prison and heavy financial penalties.
