The three Georgia poll workers who were defamed by former President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, have filed a new lawsuit against him.
The workers, Dr. Ruby Freeman, her daughter Pebblin Warren, and Warren’s daughter-in-law, Sarah Chatfield, have alleged in their new suit, which was filed on Monday in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, that Giuliani and other Trump allies falsely and defamatory accused them of perpetrating fraud during the 2020 election.
The three workers sued Giuliani for defamation and sought punitive damages for $1.3 billion after he publicly accused them of plotting to rig the election results in favor of President Joe Biden, making false allegations in multiple media interviews, press conferences, and a press release. They won a $148 million settlement from Giuliani last June.
In the new lawsuit, which was filed by lawyers from the Atlanta-based firm Ballard Spahr, the workers state that Giuliani has continued to make “hateful” and “libelous” statements about them, in violation of the settlement agreement and the court’s order. The statement goes on to say, “Mr. Giuliani has consistently and maliciously sought to falsely portray the plaintiffs as the perpetrators of an election fraud and theft conspiracy, which is simply not true.”
The lawsuit seeks damages for harm that the workers say they have suffered since the false and defamatory statements by Giuliani have been repeatedly published and reproduced.
