President Biden endorsing Supreme Court reform is an indication that he’s considering major changes to the nation’s highest court. This could include increasing the number of justices, imposing term limits, or other changes intended to reform the court’s structure, composition or functioning.
The Supreme Court has remained consistent in terms of size (nine justices) for years. So, any interference with its structure would indeed be a major shift. Supporters of these changes see it as a way to ensure a more balanced judiciary, dilute the influence of any individual justice, or reduce the intense political battles over court vacancies.
However, opponents argue that expanding the court or setting term limits could undermine the court’s independence, and create a situation where each party tries to increase the size of the court when they control the presidency and Congress, leading to an ever-expanding court.
As of now, it’s important to clarify that Biden has not made any clear endorsement but has rather shown openness to discussing reform possibilities.
