On June 30, 2021, the House of Representatives voted on a Republican-backed resolution condemning Vice President Kamala Harris for her handling of the border crisis. The resolution was spearheaded by GOP Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado and it criticized Harris for failing to visit the southern border since being appointed by President Joe Biden to handle the surge of migrants.
The resolution was largely passed along partisan lines; however, six Democrats crossed the aisle to support the resolution. These Democrats were Reps. Jared Golden (Maine), Stephanie Murphy (Fla.), Josh Gottheimer (N.J.), Filemon Vela (Texas), Henry Cuellar (Texas), and Vicente Gonzalez (Texas).
The resolution was ultimately tabled by the Democratic majority in the House, meaning it was effectively killed from further consideration. As of the time of the vote, Vice President Kamala Harris had not visited the border since taking office, but she announced plans to visit the border soon after. It’s also important to note that while she has been tasked with addressing root causes of migration, she is not technically the “border czar”. This resolution highlights ongoing political divisions over immigration policy and border security in the United States.
