President Trump has certainly been making efforts to increase his support among Black voters, as seen in his various initiatives, from police reform executive orders to the promotion of opportunity zones. However, the selection of Senator Kamala Harris as Vice Presidential candidate by Joe Biden represents a new hurdle.
Harris, a daughter of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, made history by becoming the first Black woman and first person of Indian descent to be nominated for national office by a major party. Her nomination could galvanize more Black voters and potentially eat into Trump’s attempts at making inroads with this demographic.
Furthermore, Harris is known for her strong oratory skills and prosecutorial background, enabling her to effectively challenge the Trump administration’s record. This offers an additional challenge for Trump in his campaign strategy. However, it remains to be seen how much impact Harris’s selection will have on the Black voter turnout and to what extent it will determine the election outcome.
