President Donald Trump is accelerating efforts for Nebraska to switch its method of assigning electoral votes. The change Trump is advocating for is from Nebraska’s current “congressional district method” to the more commonly used method of “winner-take-all.”
Nebraska is currently one of only two states, the other being Maine, which does not use the winner-take-all method. In these two states, electoral votes are divided among the presidential candidates based on the popular votes in each of its congressional districts, with the two remaining electoral votes awarded to the winner of the state’s popular vote.
The change that President Trump proposes would give all of Nebraska’s electoral votes to the candidate who receives the most votes statewide, regardless of the outcomes in individual districts. It is argued that this would amplify the political voice of the more populous parts of the state, as their voting outcome would determine the allocation of all of the state’s electoral votes.
