Supreme Court takes new cases, including Mexican suit against U.S. gunmakers

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear new cases during its term beginning in October 2021, including a high-profile suit by the Mexican government against U.S. gun manufacturers.

Mexico’s government accuses American gun makers of reckless business practices that supply what it termed an “iron river” of illegal firearms to Mexican drug cartels. The lawsuit alleges that these companies are aware that their practices contribute to the trafficking of guns to Mexico, yet have failed to implement reasonable controls to stop illicit sales.

This decision by the Supreme Court to hear Mexico’s suit raises questions regarding the international reach of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), a U.S. law that grants gun manufacturers immunity from most lawsuits over criminal use of their products.

The suit also highlights a long-standing issue between the U.S. and Mexico with estimates suggesting that 70% of guns recovered at Mexican crime scenes are traced back to the U.S.

No definite dates have been provided when hearing sessions for this specific case will begin. The court’s nine-month term generally culminates in late June, when key rulings are often handed down. Keep in mind that decisions can set important legal precedents and shape the laws in lasting ways.

As for the other cases the Supreme Court agreed to hear, details have not been provided, but they cover a range of legal, civil, and potentially, some politically-charged topics. Stay tuned for updates on the cases and potential implications.
