Michael Cohen, an attorney in California, recently admitted to inadvertently citing a number of fake cases in legal motions to the California Supreme Court. The cases were generated by AI, and while Cohen argues that he did not have any malicious intent in doing so, the false citations still appear to have violated the Court’s rules.
Law professors have also weighed in on the matter and have argued that while it is possible that Cohen may have inadvertently made the error, it is still unacceptable in the legal profession and should have been further investigated.
In response, Cohen has agreed to issue a formal apology to the court and has expressed his regret over the situation. In the same breath, he has also publicly discussed the importance of double-checking references from AI sources before submitting them in legal proceedings.
