Trump touts European ‘strongman’ as close ally during presidential debate: Who is Viktor Orban?

Viktor Orban is a Hungarian politician who has been Prime Minister of Hungary since 2010; he also served as Prime Minister from 1998 to 2002. Orban is a member of the Fidesz party, a national conservative and right-wing populist party.

Orban is known for his strong stance against immigration, his conservative and nationalist policies, and for his increasing control over Hungary’s institutions, such as the media and judiciary, which has raised concerns about the state of democracy in Hungary.

In terms of foreign policy, Orban has sought to balance between East and West, but has built close ties with Russia’s Vladimir Putin and other so-called ‘strongman’ leaders. His relationship with the United States and European Union has been more complicated, with both expressing concerns about his government’s direction.

During his tenure as Prime Minister, Orban has become one of Europe’s most controversial leaders, earning both praise and criticism for his policies. Some see him as a defender of national sovereignty and traditional values, while others view him as a threat to democratic norms and human rights.
