Harris calls for eliminating filibuster to pass ‘Roe’ abortion bill into federal law

Vice President Kamala Harris has recently expressed her support for bypassing the Senate filibuster in order to pass a federal law that would solidify access to abortion in response to the Supreme Court’s decision not to block Texas’s controversial new abortion law, Senate Bill 8. The federal “Roe” bill, named after the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling in 1973 that established a constitutional right to abortion, would be aimed at protecting individuals’ right to access abortions without undue governmental restrictions. However, under the current Senate rules, a supermajority of 60 votes is needed to overcome a filibuster and pass new legislation, a hurdle faced by the Democratic majority Senate.
