SpaceX’s Next Share Unlock Lands September 9, With…

SpaceX (NASDAQ: SPCX) has its next employee share unlock on September 9, when roughly 319 million restricted shares become eligible to trade, the third tranche in a staggered release that runs into December. The difference this time is the starting point: the stock enters this unlock at about $144, up nearly 28% on the month and close to its post-IPO highs, a firmer setup than it carried into either of the two tranches that already cleared in August.

That matters because SpaceX did not structure its lock-up as a single cliff. It built a staircase of releases, so each tranche is a dated, known increase in supply into a float that was tiny at listing. The question for September 9 is whether a stock trading near its highs absorbs the supply as calmly as it did when it was trading lower.

What Unlocks on September 9

The September 9 tranche is roughly 319 million shares, the same size as the August 20 release, followed by an affiliate block on September 10, bringing the September total toward 700 million shares once the September 24 tranche is included. From there the cadence continues with roughly 328 million shares each on September 24, October 9, and October 24, before the 180-day lock-up fully expires on December 8. The dates derive from the day-count mechanics in SpaceX’s IPO prospectus, as tracked in FinanceFeeds’ coverage of the August 20 tranche.

Investor Takeaway

Eligibility is not distribution: a lock-up expiry grants the right to sell, not an obligation, a point analysts stressed through both August tranches.

The Read-Across From August SpaceX Unlock

The two tranches that already cleared are the best guide. The first, about 911.5 million shares on August 6, was the largest of the whole schedule, and the stock rose 6.1% that day, having bottomed near $108 the session before. The second, 319 million shares on August 20, saw the stock give back roughly 4% to 5% into the date before the release, then find a bid. FinanceFeeds covered the first unlock as it happened. The pattern across both was the same: a soft session into or around the date, then buyers stepping in, because the selling was pre-positioned rather than dumped on the day.

The wrinkle for September 9 is the entry level. Going into August 20, SPCX traded near $137; today it is near $144, closer to its highs. A stock that has already recovered has less room for the pre-unlock fade that cushioned the earlier tranches, so the read-across is not automatic.

What to Watch Into September 9

The tell will be closing volume rather than the opening tick, since eligibility spreads across thousands of holders rather than one seller. Beyond September 9, the supply calendar keeps running through October, and the December 8 cliff releases the largest remaining block, roughly 798 million shares after a conditional tranche that failed its price trigger rolled into that month. Elon Musk’s shares stay locked until June 2027, so they are not part of any 2026 tranche.

For the fuller picture on where the stock sits against its fundamentals, FinanceFeeds’ SPCX $215 bull versus $90 bear breakdown frames the valuation debate the unlocks play out against, and the earlier post-IPO slide showed how much the wider space complex moves with this one name.

Investor Takeaway

The SpaceX stock enters this one near its highs: unlike the August tranches, there is less pre-positioning room, so September 9 is a cleaner test of real demand.
