Palo Alto Networks Closes at $419.91, Up 3.23%, as…

A record close is not a product announcement, and a cybersecurity high is not a software record. Palo Alto Networks closed Tuesday, 6 October 2026, at $419.91, up $13.15, or 3.23 percent, from Monday 5 October’s $406.76 on Nasdaq’s historical table. That print is the highest close in StockAnalysis’s daily series back to the 20 July 2012 IPO. The same session traded as high as $432.325 and finished $12.42 below the high. CrowdStrike closed at $278.86 and Fortinet at $191.27, each the highest close in its own full series. Salesforce closed at $224.99, down 2.09 percent. Reuters said the S&P 500 software and services index rose 1.3 percent to its highest level since November 2025, and LSEG put the sector’s expected 2026 earnings growth at 20.6 percent, up from 13.8 percent at the end of March. The iShares software ETF closed at $111.16, still under its 3 November 2025 close.

  • Palo Alto Networks (PANW) closed Tuesday, 6 October 2026, at $419.91, up $13.15, or 3.23 percent, from Monday 5 October’s $406.76 — Nasdaq historical daily closes, matched on the StockAnalysis quote page.
  • Tuesday’s Nasdaq range was an open of $412.795, a high of $432.325, a low of $412.00 and volume of 5,443,513. StockAnalysis rounds the high to $432.33 and lists it as the 52-week high. The close was $12.42 under that high — Nasdaq, 6 October 2026.
  • $419.91 is the highest close in the StockAnalysis daily series from the 20 July 2012 IPO through 6 October 2026. The five highest closes in that series all fall between 30 September and 6 October — series saved 7 October 2026.
  • CrowdStrike closed at $278.86, up 2.27 percent from $272.67. Fortinet closed at $191.27, up 3.88 percent from $184.13. Both are the highest closes in their StockAnalysis histories — Nasdaq and StockAnalysis, 6 October 2026.
  • Salesforce closed at $224.99, down 2.09 percent from $229.79, and 15.07 percent under the 31 December 2025 close of $264.91 — Nasdaq historical closes, 6 October 2026 and 31 December 2025.
  • The S&P 500 software and services index, Reuters ticker .SPLRCIS, rose 1.3 percent on Tuesday to its highest level since November 2025. The wire printed no point level. LSEG puts expected 2026 sector earnings growth at 20.6 percent, up from 13.8 percent at the end of March — Reuters, 6 October 2026, via Kitco.
  • IGV closed at $111.16, up 1.31 percent from $109.72, its highest close since 28 November 2025 and still 3.92 percent under the 3 November 2025 close of $115.70 — StockAnalysis IGV series, saved 7 October 2026.
  • StockAnalysis shows a $343.49 billion market cap, $11.48 billion of trailing revenue, a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 100.24, and an S&P Global average target of $396.92, marked 5.47 percent under the Tuesday close. The 2026 press index has no release after 22 September — pages fetched 7 October 2026.

What moved, and why the obvious reading is incomplete

The obvious reading is that fading AI fear paid Palo Alto a record. The tape is narrower. Nasdaq and StockAnalysis agree on $419.91, and Monday’s $406.76 was already a record close. Tuesday added $13.15. It did not start the move.

The session shape is the rest of the story. The stock opened at $412.795, never traded under $412.00, and spiked to $432.325. The close gave back $12.42, about 2.87 percent, from the high. Volume was 5,443,513 shares, against 4,450,324 on Monday and 23,692,180 on 24 February, when the close was $141.67. The record was not a volume climax.

Peers split the word “software.” CrowdStrike and Fortinet made closing records. Salesforce, which Reuters names among the earnings supports for the recovery, fell. From the 31 December 2025 Nasdaq closes, Salesforce is down 15.07 percent and the three security names are up between 128 percent and 141 percent. The table below has the exact prints.

The index claim has a name and no point level. In the 6 October story carried by Kitco, Reuters said the S&P 500 software and services index rose 1.3 percent to its highest level since November 2025, after its biggest quarterly jump of July through September since the second quarter of 2020. The index is up 5 percent this year. The Philadelphia semiconductor index is up 87.5 percent and is off its highs. LSEG’s 20.6 percent, versus 13.8 percent at the end of March, is the earnings-growth figure under the “fear is fading” line. It is a sector forecast, not a Palo Alto guide.

IGV does not confirm a software record. Tuesday’s $111.16 is the highest close since 28 November 2025, not the high of November. The 3 November 2025 close was $115.70, and the series high close is $117.79 on 22 September 2025. From $105.69 at the end of 2025, IGV is up 5.18 percent, near Reuters’ 5 percent for the S&P software index. The broad basket made a 2026 high. It did not make a record.

What the company and the analysts actually said

Palo Alto published no product release on Tuesday. The 2026 press index, fetched 7 October, shows 22 September as the newest item: “Palo Alto Networks Delivers Anthropic’s Mythos and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 to Customers with Unit 42 Continuous Frontier AI Defense.” Nothing there is dated 5, 6 or 7 October. The SEC submissions feed for CIK 0001327567 shows no filing dated 6 October. The newest entries are Form 4 insider filings, including one on 5 October. A Form 4 is not an 8-K. This piece does not treat it as the cause of the close.

The company’s account posted recognition, not guidance. At 19:51 UTC on 6 October, during the US session, @PaloAltoNtwks wrote: “We’re honored to be recognized on the 2026 Fortune Future 120 list for our continued growth in cybersecurity.” Earlier it said “95% of critical infrastructure leaders worry about Frontier AI threats,” with attackers exploiting “29% of CVEs within 24 hours” against OT patching of “55 days.” The retrieved text has no survey method, so those figures stay inside the post. Monday’s account pointed at a Fortune profile of chief executive Nikesh Arora. His words are not in a page fetched here, so he is not quoted.

CrowdStrike did post during the session, and the post is easy to over-read. At 17:00 UTC @CrowdStrike said applications were open for its accelerator with Amazon Web Services and Nvidia, citing “90+ startups” and “Nearly $1B raised,” then “Who’s next?” That is a historical tally, not a new round, and it is not a Palo Alto release. Palo Alto rose 3.23 percent. CrowdStrike rose 2.27 percent.

The sentences that actually address the fear trade are in the Reuters copy. Adam Turnquist, chief cross-asset strategist at LPL Financial, said: “AI has been more of an enabler for a lot of these software companies, more than a disruptor.” He added: “We’re seeing more of a trend change now where software has recaptured the leadership reins, and we think there’s a window here for outperformance in software over semiconductors.” Both lines are in the Kitco text of the 6 October Reuters story. The same story has software up 5 percent in 2026 and semiconductors up 87.5 percent. The window is a catch-up claim, not leadership already banked.

Rebecca Wettemann, chief executive of Valoir, said: “The whole SaaSpocalypse didn’t happen anywhere near as fast as some of the people on Wall Street thought it would.” The wire adds that vendors were reporting customer uptake as adoption moved past the experimental stage. The quoted sentence is on the Kitco page and in CTech’s same-day rewrite. Brian Mulberry, chief market strategist at Zacks Investment Management, was paraphrased. Reuters reported that he put the real test in the second half of 2027, when more data-center capacity might make AI coding a bigger threat to traditional software firms.

Published targets sat under the close before it existed. The forecast page lists an S&P Global average of $396.92, a median of $412.50, a low of $190 and a high of $475 across 50 targets. The quote page marks $396.92 as 5.47 percent under $419.91. A second series on that page, updated 2 October, averages $402.17 across 42 targets, median $415. The averages are not blended. Both are under Tuesday. The rating line is still Buy, from 55 analysts: 32 strong buy, 10 buy, 11 hold, one sell and one strong sell.

Shaul Eyal of TD Cowen reiterated Buy on 2 October and moved the target to $440 from $400, about 4.8 percent above $419.91. Peter Weed of Bernstein is recorded on 17 September as a downgrade to Hold at $351, from $253, about 16.4 percent under Tuesday. The record ran through targets that had not been rewritten for it.

The tape and the filings

The closes used here are Tuesday’s official prints. Nasdaq’s historical table is the session source. StockAnalysis is the full-history source for the record claim and the source for the multiple. Where they round a penny, the table uses Nasdaq. Palo Alto’s high is $432.325 at Nasdaq and $432.33 at StockAnalysis. The close matches at $419.91.

Source: Nasdaq historical daily closes for PANW, 1 October 2025 through the Tuesday 6 October 2026 regular-session close. The marked February close is $141.67 on 24 February 2026. Chart: FinanceFeeds.
Name Monday 5 Oct Tuesday 6 Oct Change Saved series
Palo Alto Networks $406.76 $419.91 +$13.15, +3.23 percent Highest close since the 20 July 2012 IPO. High $432.325 was not held.
CrowdStrike $272.67 $278.86 +$6.19, +2.27 percent Highest close since 12 June 2019. Up 137.96 percent from $117.19 on 31 December 2025.
Fortinet $184.13 $191.27 +$7.14, +3.88 percent Highest close since 18 November 2009. Up 140.86 percent from $79.41 on 31 December 2025.
Salesforce $229.79 $224.99 −$4.80, −2.09 percent Down 15.07 percent from $264.91 on 31 December 2025. Series high close $367.87 on 4 December 2024.
IGV $109.72 $111.16 +$1.44, +1.31 percent Highest close since 28 November 2025. Still under $115.70 on 3 November 2025.

Three security companies made closing highs. The application name Reuters cited as part of the earnings recovery fell. The software ETF rose about as much as Reuters said the S&P software index rose, and it did not clear November 2025. A single “software was bid” sentence deletes that split.

From the 24 February close of $141.67, Tuesday’s $419.91 is about 196 percent higher, and that February session traded 23.7 million shares against Tuesday’s 5.4 million. The 3.23 percent is the last step of the re-rating. StockAnalysis lists a 52-week low of $139.571. The saved file is closes, so that intraday low is not dated here.

The semiconductor side of Turnquist’s comparison is a different article. FinanceFeeds has already filed Marvell’s Tuesday investor day, the Ciena AI-networking piece, and the AMD note off Monday’s close. Reuters’ 87.5 percent semiconductor-index gain is the benchmark he is measuring software against. An earlier note covered the session in which CrowdStrike rose while chips sold off. Tuesday was the other pattern: security at records, the software ETF only firm.

There is no Tuesday 8-K beside these closes. The last release on the press index is 22 September. StockAnalysis labels the next earnings date as an estimate, 18 November 2026, not as a company confirmation. Until then, what Palo Alto said in public on this move is the Fortune-list post and the infrastructure statistic.

The multiple that sits under the record

The constraint is the multiple. The quote page, with Tuesday’s close loaded, shows trailing revenue of $11.48 billion, up 24.50 percent, net income of $307 million, and trailing earnings per share of $0.40. That $0.40 is why the trailing price-to-earnings ratio prints at 1,118.85. No accounting story is added here. The page shows $11.48 billion of trailing sales, $307 million of trailing net income, and a $343.49 billion market cap on 818.00 million shares.

The forward ratio is what the close actually pays. The quote page shows 100.24. The forecast page’s fiscal-2027 column, year ending 31 July 2027, shows average earnings per share of $4.1889 from 53 analysts. Dividing $419.91 by $4.1889 lands on about 100.2. Average revenue in that column is about $14.17 billion from 51 analysts, and the page’s average growth figure for the year is 23.46 percent. A buyer at the record is paying about 100 times a fiscal-2027 estimate that Tuesday did not update, because the company did not update it.

LSEG’s 20.6 percent is a third growth rate. It is expected 2026 earnings growth for the sector, up from 13.8 percent at the end of March. Trailing revenue growth on the quote page is 24.50 percent, and the fiscal-2027 revenue-growth average is 23.46 percent. Mixing them turns a 100-times forward multiple into a cheap-revision story it is not.

The target gap is the same point in dollars. StockAnalysis marks the S&P Global average of $396.92 as 5.47 percent under the close. TD Cowen’s $440 clears Tuesday by about $20. Bernstein’s $351 Hold does not. The S&P Global high is $475 and the low is $190. Buyers paid the forward multiple while the average published target sat underneath.

Reuters dates the index damage as a drop of more than 26 percent from late January to the April low, and puts the index up 5 percent on the year. The security stocks did not merely fade that fear. They re-rated. The triple-digit year belongs to PANW, CRWD and FTNT, not to the software index.

What happens next

Three dates follow from sources already in hand. None of them is a price target built for this piece.

The first is 18 November 2026, which StockAnalysis labels as an estimate, not a company date. Tuesday produced no guidance. The forward ratio of 100.24 rests on fiscal-2027 averages of $4.1889 a share and about $14.17 billion of revenue. If the report does not support that path, the record has no new Palo Alto number under it. If it does, the S&P Global average target is still $396.92 against a $419.91 close.

The second test is the rest of reporting season. Reuters says the recovery since late June leaned on Salesforce, ServiceNow and Accenture, plus AI-lab partnerships. Salesforce closed down 2.09 percent on Tuesday. If application software keeps diverging from the three security names, the fading-fear line is a security tape. IGV, still under its 3 November 2025 close of $115.70, has to clear that print before the two labels are one trade.

The third date is Mulberry’s, as Reuters reported it: the second half of 2027, when more data-center capacity might make AI coding a larger threat. Turnquist’s window for software over semiconductors is the opposing chain, and the same story bounds it. Software up 5 percent against semiconductors up 87.5 percent is a gap, not a completed handoff. Between Tuesday and that 2027 window, the binding constraint on Palo Alto is the multiple already paid.

This is not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What did Palo Alto Networks stock do on Tuesday, 6 October 2026?

Nasdaq shows a close of $419.91, up $13.15, or 3.23 percent, from Monday’s $406.76. The stock opened at $412.795, hit $432.325, and finished $12.42 under that high on 5,443,513 shares. StockAnalysis’s history back to the July 2012 IPO has no higher close. The gain extended a cluster of record closes. It was not a reversal from a low base, and the intraday high was not held.

Did Palo Alto announce a product on Tuesday?

No. The 2026 press index, fetched 7 October, has nothing dated 5, 6 or 7 October. The newest item is 22 September. The SEC feed for CIK 0001327567 shows no filing dated 6 October. The newest entries are Form 4s. The company’s account posted a Fortune Future 120 note and an infrastructure statistic. Those posts are real. They are not an 8-K or a new contract.

Did CrowdStrike and Fortinet confirm the record tape?

On closes, yes. CrowdStrike finished at $278.86, up 2.27 percent, the highest close in a series back to June 2019. Fortinet finished at $191.27, up 3.88 percent, the highest close back to November 2009. From 31 December 2025 they are up 137.96 percent and 140.86 percent. Palo Alto is up 127.96 percent on the same Nasdaq year-end closes. The record tape is these three finishes.

Is the software sector at a record high?

Reuters did not say that. It said the S&P 500 software and services index rose 1.3 percent to its highest level since November 2025, and that the index is up 5 percent this year. No point level was printed. LSEG’s figure in that story is 20.6 percent expected 2026 earnings growth, from 13.8 percent at the end of March. IGV closed at $111.16, still under its 3 November 2025 close of $115.70. Salesforce fell 2.09 percent.

Why is valuation the constraint if the close is a record?

StockAnalysis shows a $343.49 billion market cap, trailing revenue of $11.48 billion and trailing earnings per share of $0.40, which produces a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 1,118.85. The forward ratio is 100.24, in line with $419.91 divided by the fiscal-2027 average of $4.1889. The S&P Global average target is $396.92, marked 5.47 percent under the close. The record and a target underneath it are the constraint. Tuesday’s volume was ordinary.

What is the next dated test?

StockAnalysis labels 18 November 2026 as an estimated earnings date, not a company confirmation. That report is the first Palo Alto number that can support or break the fiscal-2027 path under the forward multiple. Reuters’ paraphrase of Brian Mulberry puts a later test in the second half of 2027, if more data-center capacity makes AI coding a larger threat. Neither date is a price target.
