Chinese Hackers Turn to Skype Video App In Latest Scam Targeting Crypto Users: SlowMist

Chinese hackers have turned to Skype video app to target cryptocurrency users in the latest scam. According to SlowMist, a China-based cybersecurity firm, scammers have been using spam messages on Skype to impersonate known industry figures and conning users into sending funds to their cryptocurrency wallets. The security firm noted that the scammer’s wallets were mostly used to start a digital currency exchange, however, the hackers have also been using digital coinage to buy items, such as game resources. Slow Mist stated that the scammers have been using a range of Skype usernames, pretending to be entrepreneurs, such as Nick Chong, Haipo Yang, and Li Li. The firm also noted that, as soon as the cybercriminal has managed to talk the victim into transfering funds, the scammer immediately blocked or deleted their account. In order to prevent fallacies, users have been advised to carefully verify the identities of those they communicate with. SlowMist urged cryptocurrency users to be alert on the internet and only carry out portfolio transfers to reputable addresses.
