On Monday, a group of over 500 current and former employees of OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research lab, submitted a petition to the board of directors requesting the immediate resignation of all board members and the CEO.
The petition is in response to the board’s controversial decision last week to fire co-founder Sam Altman and remove him from the board. According to Bloomberg, board member and investor Vinod Khosla sought to take complete control of the company, leading to Altman’s removal.
The petition argues that this decision was made without proper consultation with the existing executive team or other stakeholders. It goes on to state that the board’s decision was made unilaterally, and without any indication of what changes they hope to effect with their decision. The employees express that this lack of transparency and justification has caused a breakdown of faith with the board.
The petition also calls for the replacement of the board members and for the addition of a number of new members, including several appointed by OpenAI employees.
The employees are reportedly considering a walkout if their demands are not met.
