Someone vandalized the home of Congressman Eric Swalwell, a Democratic representative from California, on August 7, 2020, with a message calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. The vandals spray-painted the phrase “End Gaza’s suffering” on the wall of the congressman’s house, along with a peace symbol.
Swalwell responded to the incident on Twitter, emphasizing the need for peace and a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He wrote, “My house was vandalized last night with a peace sign and a message about ending the suffering in Gaza. While I don’t support this form of protest, I appreciate the sentiment of wanting peace. It’s time for a cease-fire and a resolution to these conflict.”
The incident occurred as violence between Israel and the Palestinian territories in Gaza continues to escalate. The United Nations has called for a ceasefire multiple times in order to protect civilians and prevent further escalation.
Swalwell is not the only politician whose home has been vandalized calling for peace in Gaza. In November of 2019, a group of protestors spray-painted the word “Free Gaza” on the wall of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s home, and in June of 2020, vandals wrote “Free Palestine” on the walls of Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy’s home.
