On April 24th, 2021, Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz filed a motion seeking to remove current House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from the position. Gaetz, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump, accused McCarthy of repeatedly “breaking his word and abandoning President Trump” after the former president was impeached in January. McCarthy had been an ally of Trump’s throughout his presidency. This latest move is just one in a long line of contentious outbursts coming from Gaetz as he and several other pro-Trump Republicans have broken away from the party’s leadership in recent weeks. Gaetz’s motion is largely symbolic and is not expected to gain enough support to pass the House.
