Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) hit back at President Donald Trump’s criticism of her support for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R) re-election bid, saying that the decision reflects her commitment to putting the best candidate forward.
“I have said all along that I believe we all need to support the most qualified, conservative candidate in each race and Gov. DeSantis is the best choice for the people of Florida,” said Reynolds in a statement. “Florida is a critical state in our country and both parties deserve to have a strong, principled leader at the state’s helm.”
Reynolds’ statement comes after Trump had criticized DeSantis’ polling numbers in a tweet and called on her to wash her hands of supporting him. DeSantis had backed Trump in the 2020 election and had an endorsement from the president. However, recent polling has shown him running neck and neck with Democratic challenger Andrew Gillum.
Reynolds argued that despite DeSantis’ current polling, he remains the best candidate in the race and she will stand by her decision to endorse him.
“Gov. DeSantis has my full support, and I will continue to stand with him this November as he works to serve the people of his state,” said Reynolds.
