New Hampshire announces first-in-the-nation presidential primary, defying DNC

On August 29, 2019, the New Hampshire Secretary of State announced that the state would hold the nation’s first presidential primary on February 11, 2020, despite the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) threat to sanction New Hampshire for violating the party’s primary calendar rules. The ruling came after a lengthy legal battle, in which New Hampshire argued that the DNC’s primary calendar rules were not legally binding and violated the state’s long-standing tradition of holding the first-in-the-nation primary.
