The Republicans’ initiation of an impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump starts on shaky political ground. President Trump is currently polling with an approval rating of about 44%, the lowest of any President since Richard Nixon. Only around 25% of the population is in favor of impeaching President Trump.
Additionally, the majority of the American public does not look favorably upon the idea of impeaching the President, with 53% of Americans disapproving of the idea. Additionally, a strong majority (64%) view the impeachment inquiry as a partisan attempt to damage the political standing of President Trump.
The Republican Party faces an uphill battle to make a case for their investigation into President Trump’s interactions with Ukraine. There is little public support for their action, and it could easily backfire on them politically if they are seen to be overreaching.
