Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida and United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley have both promised to pardon President Donald Trump if he is convicted for any crime. This pledge was made in response to the former president’s intensifying legal troubles.
The two politicians’ comments come as Trump faces growing legal risks stemming from the FBI’s investigation into his business practices and ties to Russia, as well as the ongoing prosecution by New York authorities. DeSantis and Haley both claim that these legal issues are politically motivated rather than having any valid grounds.
Although it is unclear whether the president has any reason to concern himself with criminal charges, DeSantis and Haley’s comments suggest that they would support a pardon if Trump is eventually convicted. This would indicate that both DeSantis and Haley view Trump’s innocence as a foregone conclusion and that any attempts to prosecute him would only be a legal formality.
