Governor Nikki Haley and the South Carolina China Office have partnered with the Confucius Institute, a Chinese program run by the Chinese Communist Party, to send 20 students to a summer camp in Beijing in 2016. The Confucius Institute is a non-profit organization that “promotes the study of Chinese language and culture in South Carolina and beyond”. Through the camp, the students will have the opportunity to explore the culture and language of China as well as live in a Chinese university dormitory. The South Carolina government has said that this initiative is part of its larger initiative to bridge the cultural and educational gap between China and the United States.
