What Is UniCredit Looking to Build?

UniCredit Bank is exploring technology providers that could support a broader move into digital assets, including crypto trading, custody and tokenized investment products.

The Italian bank’s discussions remain at an early stage, with areas under consideration including digital asset brokerage, crypto custody, tokenized investment products and fixed-income securities that use stablecoins.

The project suggests UniCredit is examining infrastructure that could allow it to offer digital asset services within its existing banking operations rather than relying solely on external crypto platforms. The choice of technology provider would be important because custody, settlement and compliance requirements differ substantially from those used for conventional securities.

No provider has yet been identified, and the bank has not disclosed a timetable for launching any of the services under consideration.

The range of products being evaluated is notable. Crypto custody and brokerage would give UniCredit direct exposure to established digital assets, while tokenized investments and stablecoin-linked fixed income would place the bank closer to the institutional tokenization market developing around traditional financial products.

Why Do Stablecoin-Based Fixed-Income Products Matter?

The inclusion of stablecoin-based fixed-income securities points to a broader use case than simply allowing customers to buy and hold cryptocurrencies.

Stablecoins can be used as a settlement asset for tokenized securities, allowing payments and transfers to occur on blockchain infrastructure without relying on traditional banking hours. Combined with tokenized bonds or other fixed-income instruments, that could reduce settlement time and allow assets and cash to move through the same digital infrastructure.

For banks, however, the opportunity comes with additional requirements. Custody arrangements must protect private keys and customer assets, while trading systems need controls around execution, liquidity, market access and regulatory reporting.

Integrating these functions into a bank’s existing compliance and risk systems can therefore require specialist infrastructure rather than simply connecting to a crypto exchange.

Investor Takeaway

UniCredit’s interest extends beyond basic crypto trading. A platform capable of combining custody, brokerage, tokenized investments and stablecoin settlement would give the bank infrastructure that could support several digital asset businesses from a single regulated banking environment.

How Are Other Banks Expanding Into Digital Assets?

UniCredit’s search comes as major banks increasingly move from limited blockchain experiments toward customer-facing trading, custody and payment products.

U.S. Bank this week completed a live cross-border payment using its proprietary USBDC stablecoin. The transaction showed how banks are testing stablecoins for payments alongside their existing deposit and settlement infrastructure.

Standard Chartered has taken a more direct trading approach. The London-headquartered bank launched spot Bitcoin and Ether trading for institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates on September 3, building on digital asset custody services introduced in the region in September 2024.

In Israel, Bank Leumi has partnered with Galaxy Digital to prepare Bitcoin, Ether and Solana trading through its investment platform. The service is expected to launch in early 2027.

These projects illustrate several different banking strategies. Some institutions are focusing on stablecoin payments, others on custody and institutional trading, while some are integrating crypto directly into existing investment platforms.

What Could UniCredit’s Next Step Look Like?

UniCredit’s eventual direction will depend heavily on the technology provider it selects and which services the bank chooses to prioritize.

A custody-first approach could provide the foundation for later trading and tokenized investment products, particularly because secure asset storage is required before banks can offer broader digital asset services. Brokerage infrastructure could provide a faster route to customer trading if UniCredit chooses to connect clients to external liquidity rather than build its own market infrastructure.

Tokenized investment products would take the bank further into the convergence between traditional securities and blockchain settlement. Stablecoin-based fixed income could be particularly important if institutional demand grows for securities that can be issued, transferred and settled digitally.

The project remains exploratory, so there is no indication that all of the services under discussion will ultimately be launched.

Even so, UniCredit’s search adds another major European bank to the group examining how crypto assets, tokenized securities and stablecoins can fit inside conventional banking infrastructure. The next point to watch is whether the bank selects a technology partner and moves from infrastructure discussions toward a defined product launch.
