Nebius Stock After Musk Says Debt Markets Have Shut on…

Nebius fell 5.18% to $150.52 on Monday after Elon Musk said debt markets have closed to companies that depend on AI data centers for revenue, a warning delivered in the same post announcing that SpaceX had raised $40 billion of its own. The Nebius stock decline takes the one-month loss to 32.50%, with CoreWeave down 3.72% to $52.22 beside it.

Musk’s claim is a forecast rather than a finding, and it comes from the borrower least exposed to the problem he describes. What makes it worth taking seriously for Nebius stock is that the debt of both listed neoclouds already shows the repricing.

Musk’s Post Was a Reply Agreeing With Chamath Palihapitiya

The post everyone traded on was a reply, and it opens with the words “Pretty much.” Musk was agreeing with Chamath Palihapitiya, who had written hours earlier that “neoclouds are disorganized and poorly capitalized,” a judgment he offered while disclosing his own portfolio of energized land assets.

“As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers,” Musk wrote. “SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue. That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.”

Pretty much.

As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers.

SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue.

That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 25, 2026

That final sentence has been largely dropped from coverage of the Nebius stock move. Musk’s own preceding post predicted “a lot of stranded compute in partially complete data centers,” and the reply has drawn 11.5 million views.

Reuters reported that it was not clear what Musk meant by the deal being “closed,” or whether investors had agreed pricing. He called the money “primarily callable debt for GPU purchases that will arrive in Q1 and Q2,” and said separately that SpaceX would not buy any neoclouds because doing so would be “pointless.” Bloomberg reported the debt sits in a special purpose vehicle, off the balance sheet, protecting the investment-grade rating Musk credited for the raise.

Nebius Stock Fell 5.18% and the Selling Started Before Musk

The sell-off in Nebius stock predates the weekend by about three weeks, and it started in the credit market. It began when the premium on CoreWeave’s five-year credit default swaps widened to levels investors read as distress, which is a credit signal rather than an equity one. FinanceFeeds covered that repricing and the Gartner arithmetic behind it, which puts the revenue AI data centers need through 2030 at $8.5 trillion against no more than $3.6 trillion of AI revenue.

An r/StockMarket thread titled “There’s gonna be a bloodbath of Neocloud on Monday” ran through Sunday night, a marker of retail positioning in Nebius stock rather than a cause of it.

Nebius stock is still up 82.49% for the year on a market value of $43.15 billion, while CoreWeave is down 26.64% and 55.17% over six months. Goldman Sachs upgraded CoreWeave to Buy on 19 October with a $106 target, and the shares have fallen a further 16.81% in the five sessions since.

Investor Takeaway

CoreWeave bonds yielding above 15% are the hard evidence behind the Nebius stock move, because they price the funding question Musk raised before any equity does.

CoreWeave’s Bonds Already Yield 16%, Which Is Musk’s Point

The hardest evidence sits in the bond market rather than the share price. CoreWeave’s October 2031 notes carry a 9.75% coupon and yield 16.14%, its February 2031 paper yields 15.81% on a 9.00% coupon, and two July 2032 issues yield 15.58% and 15.21%. Those are distressed levels for the largest listed neocloud.

CoreWeave also carries convertible notes at a 1.75% coupon maturing December 2031 and 2.88% maturing April 2033, borrowed when money was cheap, and that contrast inside one stack is the tell. Interest expense reached $640 million in the second quarter, up 140% on the year, with third-quarter guidance of $860 million to $940 million against roughly $35.6 billion of total debt and about $15 billion of maturities through 2028.

Nebius Pays 0.50% on 2030 Paper and SOFR Plus 2.75% on Last Week’s Loan

The same pattern runs through the Nebius stock issuer’s debt schedule, one rung lower. Its convertible notes maturing February 2030 carry a 0.50% coupon and the September 2030 notes 1.00%, rising through 1.25% on the March 2031 paper to 4.50% on the February 2034 notes.

Then came last Thursday, when the pricing on new money looked nothing like the old. Nebius took a $3.5 billion facility from Citi at SOFR plus 2.75% with a 364-day term, citing $40 billion of customer commitments, and the Nebius stock reaction was a 7% fall. A one-year bank facility at a floating spread is a different instrument from a 0.50% convertible, and the distance between them is what Musk described.

Non-current debt reached $8.50 billion at the half year against $4.10 billion at year end, with cash at $8.04 billion, per the Q2 results. CoreWeave shows the same shape at larger scale, with a $99.4 billion backlog against $50.8 billion of liabilities.

A Term Refinancing, Prepayments and Nvidia’s 9.3% Stake

Three developments would undercut the thesis, and each would reach Nebius stock long before any of the failures Musk forecasts. A refinancing of the Citi facility into longer money on better terms answers him directly, because the 364-day tenor is the tell that banks wanted a short leash. Whether the $40 billion of cited customer commitments converts into prepayments is the second, since prepayments fund capacity without touching credit markets at all.

Nvidia holds 9.3% of Nebius Class A and stakes across the sector, so the chip supplier has reason to keep its customers financed, which is the third test. Chief executive Jensen Huang told CNBC last week that demand for neoclouds is “off the charts.”

Investor Takeaway

CoreWeave bonds yielding above 15% are the hard evidence behind the Nebius stock move, because they price the funding question Musk raised before any equity does.
