What Can Investors Do With Coinbase’s Tokenized Stocks on Aave?

Coinbase-issued tokenized stocks can now be used as collateral for USDC loans on Aave V4, turning seven U.S. equities from assets that can be held and traded onchain into collateral that can support decentralized borrowing.

Aave’s new Equities Hub on Base accepts tokenized shares tracking Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla. The products are available to eligible users outside the U.S. in permitted jurisdictions, continuing Coinbase’s rollout of tokenized U.S. equities on Base that began in August.

Users can deposit the equity tokens as collateral and borrow USDC against them. The stocks themselves cannot be borrowed at launch, limiting the initial market to stock-backed stablecoin lending rather than allowing investors to short or borrow one equity against another.

“Public equities are one of the largest pools of capital in the world, and tokenization is starting to bring that capital onchain,” Aave Labs founder and CEO Stani Kulechov said.

The development gives the tokens another function beyond trading. A holder of tokenized Nvidia, for example, can maintain exposure to the stock while using that position to obtain USDC liquidity rather than selling it.

How Much Can Aave’s Equities Market Handle?

The market is starting with deliberately limited capacity. Initial collateral caps across the seven stocks total roughly $29 million, while the USDC supply cap is approximately $32 million and the USDC borrow cap is $21 million.

Collateral factors range from 65% to 79%, depending on the stock. Those limits determine how much USDC a user can borrow against each tokenized equity and provide a buffer against movements in the underlying shares.

The seven stocks are pooled into a dedicated Equities Hub using Aave V4’s Hub and Spoke architecture. A single USDC reserve provides the borrowing liquidity, while risk settings remain specific to each equity. Problems involving one stock can therefore be managed without automatically extending the same parameters to the other six assets.

The launch completes a step that was previously missing when Chainlink was selected to price Coinbase’s tokenized stocks. Oracle data gave DeFi applications the valuation infrastructure needed for collateral calculations, but Aave V4 was required before stock-backed lending could go live.

Investor Takeaway

The bigger change is not simply that stocks are moving onchain. Tokenized equities are beginning to function as productive DeFi collateral, allowing investors to retain equity exposure while borrowing stablecoins against it. That creates new capital efficiency, but also introduces liquidation, oracle and smart-contract risks that do not exist when the same shares are held in a conventional brokerage account.

What Happens When Stocks Trade 24/7 but Prices Do Not?

The Equities Hub also exposes an unusual market-structure issue. Coinbase’s stock tokens can move through blockchain markets around the clock, while the underlying U.S. shares still trade primarily during defined market sessions.

Aave’s initial setup uses Chainlink tokenized-equity feeds that publish prices 24 hours a day during the five-day trading week. Over weekends and market holidays, the feeds hold their last published values.

That creates a potential mismatch between a token that remains transferable and a collateral price that may temporarily stop updating. It is one of the risks investors already face when trading Coinbase tokenized stocks on Base, but it becomes more important once those assets support leveraged borrowing.

If an equity-related event occurs while traditional markets are closed, the eventual adjustment in the oracle price could change a borrower’s loan health rapidly when pricing resumes. Conservative collateral factors and exposure caps are therefore central to the initial design.

Why Does This Matter for the Tokenized Equity Market?

Tokenization has often focused on putting traditional assets onto blockchains. Aave is pushing the next stage: making those assets usable inside credit markets.

That could matter more for adoption than 24/7 trading alone. Once tokenized stocks can serve as collateral, they can interact with stablecoins, lending protocols and other onchain financial products rather than functioning primarily as digital wrappers around securities.

Aave already has substantial experience connecting real-world assets with decentralized credit and has processed more than $1 trillion in cumulative loans. Adding public equities gives the protocol another large collateral category to pursue.

Additional Coinbase-issued stocks could be admitted to the Equities Hub over time, while Aave has also left room for GHO to become a borrowable asset subject to governance and risk review.

The initial $29 million collateral limit is small relative to global equity markets. The more important test is whether investors actually choose to borrow against tokenized stocks. If they do, the competition in tokenized equities will increasingly be about what those assets can do after issuance, not simply how many stocks a platform can put onchain.
