Why Is Manpreet Kohli Facing Extradition?

Manpreet Kohli, the former chief executive of cryptocurrency company Saitama, has moved closer to facing trial in the United States after a British judge rejected his challenge against extradition over allegations of wire fraud and market manipulation.

Kohli, a 45-year-old Indian national based in the UK, led Saitama, which promoted a token on the Ethereum blockchain that reached a market value of about $7.5 billion at its peak. U.S. prosecutors accuse Kohli and more than a dozen others of participating in a wide-ranging scheme involving cryptocurrency market manipulation.

Prosecutors allege that Kohli and his co-conspirators publicly claimed to be holding and purchasing Saitama tokens while privately selling their holdings for millions of dollars in profit. Kohli is alleged to have made approximately $20 million.

He was arrested in London in 2024 following a U.S. investigation in which the FBI took the unusual step of creating its own digital token to help identify suspected market manipulation. The investigation targeted practices designed to create artificial trading activity and attract investors to crypto assets.

What Did The UK Court Decide?

Judge Samuel Goozee rejected Kohli’s extradition challenge on Aug. 19 and referred the case to British ministers, who will decide whether to order his transfer to the United States. Government approval is generally one of the final stages of the UK extradition process, although Kohli retains the right to appeal.

Kohli had opposed extradition partly on the grounds that U.S. authorities would not have adequate safeguards to address the risk that he could take his own life while in custody.

Goozee rejected that argument, finding that sufficient arrangements were available during transportation and within the U.S. prison system. “I find there are clearly appropriate arrangements in place both during transit and within the prison system in the U.S. to be able to cope with (Kohli’s) mental health and reduce the risk of suicide to an acceptable level,” the judge said.

Kohli remains free on £200,000 bail while the extradition process continues. The ruling does not determine whether he is guilty of the U.S. charges, which would be decided in criminal proceedings if he is ultimately extradited.

Investor Takeaway

The Saitama case shows that U.S. authorities can pursue alleged crypto market manipulation beyond American borders. For investors, promotional claims about token holdings, trading activity and liquidity remain areas where enforcement risk can intersect directly with market integrity.

Why Does The Saitama Token’s Legal Status Matter?

Kohli has also challenged the U.S. case itself. Earlier in August, a federal judge in Boston rejected his attempt to dismiss the indictment based on an argument that the Saitama token could not legally be treated as a security subject to U.S. securities law.

That decision leaves prosecutors able to continue pursuing the case if Kohli is brought to the United States. It also adds another example to the continuing legal debate over when cryptocurrency tokens fall within existing securities rules.

The distinction matters because market manipulation involving securities can bring federal securities laws into play alongside traditional fraud charges. Crypto defendants have repeatedly challenged the application of those laws to digital tokens, making the classification of individual assets an important part of enforcement cases.

For Saitama investors, however, the allegations extend beyond the token’s regulatory classification. Prosecutors claim that insiders were telling the public they were holding or buying the asset while privately selling it, making the accuracy of disclosures and the authenticity of trading activity central to the case.

What Does The Case Mean For Crypto Enforcement?

The investigation behind the charges shows how U.S. enforcement agencies are using more aggressive methods to investigate manipulation in token markets. The FBI’s creation of a digital token to expose suspected misconduct illustrated a move beyond reviewing transactions after the fact toward directly testing how market participants operate.

The international element is also important. Kohli was based in Britain, yet U.S. prosecutors pursued charges and sought his extradition to Boston. If the transfer is ultimately approved, the case would reinforce the ability of American authorities to pursue overseas executives when alleged conduct affects markets or investors within U.S. jurisdiction.

Kohli can still appeal, meaning extradition is not final. His next legal steps and the British government’s decision will determine whether the dispute remains focused on the UK extradition process or moves to a U.S. courtroom where prosecutors would have to prove the allegations against him.
