SpaceX Agrees to Buy Grain’s 800 MHz Spectrum for…

SpaceX shares were up 1.2% in Friday afternoon trading while T-Mobile fell 13.2% and Verizon lost about 10%, as investors repriced the U.S. wireless market following SpaceX’s agreement to acquire nationwide 800 MHz spectrum from Grain Management.

AT&T was also sharply lower, with the three incumbent carriers ranking as the biggest percentage decliners in the S&P 500 during the afternoon session. The reaction had already been visible before the open, when SpaceX was up about 4% while T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon were down roughly 5% to 7%.

The proposed transaction was announced after Thursday’s close. Grain said SpaceX will acquire 100% of its nationwide 800 MHz portfolio, giving Starlink Mobile access to up to 14 MHz of paired low-band spectrum. The transaction still requires Federal Communications Commission approval.

Neither company disclosed the purchase price. Reuters and The Wall Street Journal reported that SpaceX is paying about $8 billion, citing people familiar with the transaction, so that figure remains reported rather than confirmed.

FinanceFeeds’ earlier Friday coverage of the SpaceX spectrum deal noted that the licences have not yet transferred and that Thursday’s official closing prices preceded the announcement.

The 800 MHz Spectrum Solves a Coverage Problem, Not a Capacity Problem

The reason investors care about 800 MHz is propagation.

Lower-frequency spectrum travels farther and penetrates buildings, trees and other obstacles more effectively than higher-frequency bands. SpaceX says the spectrum will provide a coverage layer alongside Starlink Mobile’s existing 2 GHz mid-band holdings, allowing the service to reach ordinary phones both from satellites and terrestrial infrastructure.

Most existing U.S. smartphones already support the 800 MHz band, according to Reuters, reducing the need for customers to buy specialist satellite handsets.

The deal also arrived one day after the FCC approved SpaceX’s request to deploy 15,000 satellites for its next-generation direct-to-device network. Elon Musk described the 800 MHz portfolio as the final spectrum component needed for “complete phone coverage in America.”

But coverage is not the same thing as mobile-network capacity.

Wireless analyst Vish Nandlall argued that the spectrum “provides coverage rather than much capacity.” Fourteen megahertz can improve rural reach and indoor reception, but it is not enough on its own to carry dense urban mobile traffic at the volumes handled by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

A Rival Network Could Still Cost $50 Billion to $130 Billion

That is why the scale of Friday’s carrier selloff is debatable.

Nandlall cited Bernstein estimates of $50 billion to $130 billion to build a genuinely competitive U.S. mobile network. BNP Paribas has previously estimated roughly $100 billion, based on tens of thousands of terrestrial sites.

SpaceX does not necessarily have to build all of that infrastructure itself. It could lease tower capacity, use rooftops and small cells, buy wholesale mobile capacity or concentrate first on rural customers, vehicles and bundles combining Starlink broadband with mobile service.

That possibility explains the opposite move in tower stocks. American Tower, Crown Castle and SBA Communications rose between 6.5% and 13.3% Friday afternoon as investors considered whether a fourth national network could create a new tenant for existing infrastructure.

Grain itself acquired the 800 MHz portfolio from T-Mobile only in August. T-Mobile received $2.9 billion in cash plus Grain’s 600 MHz licences in that transaction. A reported $8 billion resale just two months later therefore puts a dramatically higher headline value on the same spectrum, although the two transactions have different structures and the SpaceX price has not been officially disclosed.

SpaceX Is Adding Another Capital-Intensive Business

The wireless push comes while investors are already debating how much capital SpaceX will require across its other projects.

FinanceFeeds reported Thursday that SpaceX is in talks around a potential $40 billion Nvidia financing package tied to AI infrastructure, another prospective use of large amounts of debt and capital.

The company’s rising public valuation has also become central to Elon Musk’s personal wealth. A separate FinanceFeeds analysis showed that the bulk of Musk’s estimated $1.028 trillion fortune is tied to SpaceX shares, rather than liquid cash.

Friday’s market reaction says investors are taking Starlink Mobile’s competitive threat seriously. But the 800 MHz purchase does not instantly give SpaceX the capacity, towers or economics of an incumbent carrier.

It gives SpaceX something more specific: a nationwide coverage layer that makes building such a competitor considerably more plausible.
