XRP Ledger’s Batch Upgrade Goes Live September 29 — Servers…

The XRP Ledger is preparing to activate its long-awaited Batch amendment on September 29, introducing the ability to group multiple transactions together and execute them under a single set of conditions.

The upgrade requires server operators to run rippled — also known as xrpld — version 3.3.0 or later. Servers remaining on older versions when amendments enabled by the release activate will become amendment-blocked, preventing them from determining the current state of the ledger until their software is upgraded.

Version 3.3.0 was released on August 6 and introduces support for Batch alongside several other amendments and protocol changes. The activation process follows XRPL’s amendment system, under which protocol changes require sustained validator support before automatically becoming active.

For exchanges, wallet providers, validators and other infrastructure operators, the September 29 deadline is therefore operational rather than optional if their servers are affected by newly enabled amendments.

Batch Brings Atomic Transactions to XRPL

The centerpiece is the Batch amendment, which introduces a new Batch transaction capable of containing as many as eight inner transactions.

Those transactions can be executed using different modes. Under an “All or Nothing” structure, every included transaction must succeed or none is applied. Other modes allow transactions to execute independently, stop after the first successful transaction or stop after the first failed transaction.

That creates applications extending beyond simple transaction bundling.

A user could, for example, construct operations involving several coordinated payments or account actions while ensuring they execute according to predetermined conditions. Developers can also reduce the complexity involved in orchestrating multi-step workflows where one transaction should depend on another.

XRPL documentation describes Batch as particularly useful for operations requiring atomicity — meaning a collection of actions can effectively be treated as a single operation rather than exposing users to a partially completed sequence.

The amendment also introduces new transaction fields and validation rules required to authenticate the inner transactions included within a batch.

Batch is among a broader group of protocol amendments supported by the 3.3.0 release, continuing XRPL’s expansion beyond its original payments-focused architecture.

Older Servers Risk Becoming Amendment-Blocked

The consequences for infrastructure operators come from the way XRP Ledger upgrades are activated.

XRPL amendments do not become mandatory immediately when new software is released. Validators first vote on individual amendments. Once an amendment maintains the required 80% support for two consecutive weeks, it becomes permanently enabled.

Servers running software that does not understand an enabled amendment then become amendment-blocked.

That does not mean they are permanently banned from XRP Ledger or that their XRP is lost. Instead, the outdated server stops processing validated ledgers because it cannot safely interpret the network’s new transaction rules. Upgrading to compatible software allows it to reconnect and resume synchronization.

The distinction is important: September 29 is not a deadline affecting ordinary XRP holders who simply keep tokens in a wallet.

It primarily concerns validators, exchanges, API providers and organizations operating their own XRP Ledger infrastructure.

The 3.3.0 release therefore combines a significant functional expansion with a routine but important infrastructure requirement.

Batch transactions give XRPL developers a native mechanism for coordinating multiple operations with atomic execution, bringing functionality commonly associated with programmable blockchain systems deeper into the ledger.

For server operators, however, the immediate priority is simpler. Once the relevant amendments activate, infrastructure that has not been upgraded to a compatible xrpld release can no longer reliably follow the network — making the move to 3.3.0 or later essential before the new rules take effect.
