Deutsche Bank Nears Launch of First Crypto Custody Service…

Deutsche Bank expects to launch its first digital asset custody service within weeks, with plans to expand into Asian financial centres in 2027 as Germany’s largest lender moves to build a broader business around cryptocurrencies, stablecoins and tokenized financial instruments.Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank’s Corporate Bank, confirmed the timetable on October 16 during the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Bangkok. The platform will initially launch in Germany, serving institutional and corporate clients before pursuing international expansion.

The initiative forms part of Deutsche Bank’s strategy to achieve compound annual revenue growth of 8% in its corporate banking division through 2028. Beyond cryptocurrency custody, the bank plans to introduce stablecoin-related services, tokenized deposits and infrastructure supporting blockchain-based securities issuance.

What Will Deutsche Bank’s Crypto Custody Platform Offer?

The initial service will allow eligible institutional clients to hold and transfer selected digital assets without maintaining their own cryptocurrency wallets or private-key management infrastructure.

Bitcoin and Ether will form the core offering. Deutsche Bank’s September 16 announcement also identified three stablecoins and e-money tokens intended for custody support: USDC, EURC and the euro-denominated EURAU.

The distinction between custody and payment functionality is important. Although these stablecoins are included in the bank’s initial supported-asset plans, services allowing clients to convert between conventional money and stablecoins will be introduced through subsequent development phases.

Deutsche Bank will manage digital wallets and cryptographic private keys for clients. Its security architecture includes hardware-based key protection, segregated responsibilities, multi-person transaction approvals and separate warm- and cold-storage environments.

The service will initially target corporations, asset managers, hedge funds, brokers, custodians and sovereign institutions rather than retail customers.

As FinanceFeeds reported in September, the bank’s institutional custody infrastructure remains subject to completion of the applicable regulatory process, with its supported assets and service scope dependent on internal risk and product approvals.

Investor Takeaway

The immediate commercial opportunity is institutional custody rather than cryptocurrency trading. The platform could create recurring service-fee revenue while allowing Deutsche Bank to develop additional products for existing corporate clients without necessarily taking direct exposure to cryptocurrency prices.

Why Is Deutsche Bank Expanding Into Stablecoins and Tokenization?

Podobnik identified the growth of the digital economy, particularly the hundreds of billions of dollars represented by outstanding stablecoins, as evidence that financial institutions must respond to new forms of digital value.

He argued that blockchain-based financial services should complement established banking infrastructure rather than displace it.

The bank’s longer-term plans include tokenized deposits, which represent bank deposit liabilities on blockchain infrastructure, and services supporting the issuance of tokenized securities such as digital bonds.

These products address different financial requirements. Stablecoins can support digital payments and settlement, while tokenized deposits may enable banks to move deposit-based value through programmable financial infrastructure. Tokenized securities could eventually expand the bank’s role in issuance, custody and post-trade servicing.

Deutsche Bank has explored these opportunities for several years. In June 2025, the lender was considering issuing its own stablecoin or participating in an industry-backed digital currency initiative.

However, the latest announcements do not establish that Deutsche Bank has committed to issuing a proprietary stablecoin. Supporting existing tokens, issuing a new token and offering tokenized deposits remain distinct business decisions.

For the corporate bank, the attraction is potentially broader than custody fees. Integrating digital assets into existing cash management, payments and securities services could deepen client relationships and generate additional transaction-related income.

How Does the 2027 Asia Expansion Fit Into the Strategy?

Deutsche Bank plans to extend the custody platform into Asian financial centres next year, although Podobnik did not identify specific jurisdictions or provide market-by-market launch dates.

The regional expansion would build on existing relationships with cryptocurrency businesses across Asia.

In February 2025, Deutsche Bank introduced fiat deposit services for Hong Kong-based HashKey Exchange, allowing customers to transfer Hong Kong dollars and US dollars through its virtual account infrastructure.

The relationship illustrates how the bank has already developed payment and banking services for regulated digital asset businesses without directly providing custody of their customers’ cryptocurrencies.

Adding institutional custody could broaden those relationships, potentially allowing Deutsche Bank to provide traditional banking and blockchain-related services through a more integrated offering.

Nevertheless, international expansion will require the bank to address different licensing requirements, asset eligibility rules and custody obligations across jurisdictions. Its planned Asian rollout should therefore be treated as a strategic timetable rather than confirmed regulatory approval.

Investor Takeaway

Asia could offer cross-selling opportunities through Deutsche Bank’s existing digital asset banking relationships. However, revenue generation will depend on regulatory permissions, institutional onboarding and actual assets under custody, none of which has been quantified for the planned regional expansion.

What Could Determine the Platform’s Commercial Success?

The approaching launch would move Deutsche Bank’s digital asset strategy from development toward operational delivery, but the financial contribution remains uncertain.

The bank has not disclosed custody pricing, expected assets under custody, initial customer commitments or specific revenue targets for the new platform.

Those figures will matter more to investors than the number of cryptocurrencies supported. Custody businesses generally benefit from scale, but maintaining secure infrastructure, regulatory compliance and institutional servicing capabilities can create substantial fixed operating costs.

Competition is another consideration. Established crypto-native custodians and financial institutions are already pursuing professional clients, making security, integration with existing banking services and pricing important competitive factors.

Regulation also remains central. The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets framework establishes operational and safeguarding requirements for crypto-asset services, while Deutsche Bank has emphasized that its rollout remains conditional on completing the relevant regulatory process and technical preparations.

Custody protections also do not eliminate underlying cryptocurrency price volatility, counterparty failures or cyber risks. Digital assets held in custody do not receive deposit-guarantee protection equivalent to eligible traditional bank deposits.

Investor Takeaway

The launch is strategically relevant to Deutsche Bank’s 2028 growth objectives, but its earnings impact cannot yet be measured. Initial client adoption, custody balances, fee income and the delivery of stablecoin and tokenization services will provide stronger evidence of commercial progress.
