Nebius Stock Fell 10% and IREN 12% as Gartner’s $8.5…

Nebius stock closed down 10.08% at $186.01 on Wednesday and IREN fell 12.18% to $30.56, on a day that brought the sector a bearish Gartner forecast and a scare over CoreWeave’s debt at the same time. Both extended the slide overnight, with Nebius stock at $178.20 and IREN at $29.15 in Thursday’s premarket, per onchain data from TradingView.

The Gartner note is being reported as a prediction that 80% of the sector will disappear. That is not the wording Gartner used, and the distinction matters for anyone holding Nebius stock into its 22 October results.

Gartner’s Wording Was “Cease Independent Operations,” Which Includes Being Acquired

The Gartner release, dated 14 October from Stamford, predicts that “cost pressure and a lack of a differentiating business model will force over 80% of neocloud providers to cease independent operations” by 2030. Ceasing independent operations covers acquisition and merger as readily as it covers failure, and Gartner headed that section of the release “Neocloud Market to Consolidate by 2030.”

Coverage of the forecast rendered it a good deal more final than the wording supports. Stocktwits ran it as 80% of the market set to “cease to exist” and Seeking Alpha as neoclouds that would “evaporate.” The underlying prediction is that four in five of these companies will not be standalone businesses by 2030, which is a claim about ownership rather than about data centers going dark. Nebius stock and IREN were sold on the harsher reading.

The $8.5 Trillion AI Data Centers Need Against the $3.6 Trillion Gartner Sees

Will Sommer, a senior director analyst at Gartner, set out the arithmetic underneath the call. AI providers are expected to spend nearly $1 trillion on AI infrastructure this year and a further $6 trillion between 2027 and 2030. To cover that announced capital spending, the financing costs attached to it, and a 12% return on invested capital, Sommer said AI data center owners would need to generate a cumulative $8.5 trillion in revenue through 2030.

Against that, Gartner forecasts total enterprise and consumer AI revenue attributable to AI data centers will “reach no more than $3.6 trillion.” The gap is $4.9 trillion, and it is wider than it looks, because Sommer added that most AI-native providers run asset-light models and “less than half of AI revenue will be earned by providers that own significant AI infrastructure.” Gartner puts more than $3.5 trillion of spending at risk of impairment by the end of 2030, more than $4 trillion through 2032, and does not expect that 12% return to be reached before the end of 2032.

The specific squeeze on neoclouds comes from a mismatch in timing rather than in demand. Gartner estimates AI-optimized infrastructure-as-a-service spending grows from $66 billion in 2027 to $174 billion in 2030, which Sommer called “too low for most AI compute providers to recover their AI investments before the current generation of AI semiconductors is replaced.” Hyperscalers can fund the wait out of diversified revenue, and neoclouds have no such cushion.

Investor Takeaway

Gartner forecasting that over 80% of neocloud providers will cease independent operations by 2030 describes consolidation through acquisition rather than mass insolvency, which is a different risk from the one that moved Nebius stock on Wednesday.

Nebius Stock Fell 10% as the Whole Neocloud Complex Sold

Nebius stock was not alone, because the selling on Wednesday reached every listed name across the wider neocloud group. Cipher Mining closed down 12.35%, TeraWulf 12.64%, Hut 8 10.45%, Applied Digital 9.43% and MARA 9.66%, while CoreWeave dropped more than 15.5%.

One caution on attribution belongs here, because Wednesday carried a second catalyst alongside the forecast. A viral chart of a $1.25 billion batch of CoreWeave bonds yielding briefly above 15% drove its own selloff, taking Oracle down 8.8% and Dell 11.3%, neither of which Gartner’s neocloud forecast touches. CoreWeave chief executive Mike Intrator told staff in a memo reviewed by Bloomberg that “the market misunderstands and acts irrationally,” pointing to a $104 billion backlog that he said more than supports the company’s debt. Neither Nebius nor IREN has responded publicly to Gartner.

That divergence between the two is the part of Wednesday worth holding onto. Over six months Nebius stock is up 13.57% while IREN is down 37.61%, and across 2026 Nebius stock has gained 113.84% against a 21.66% fall at IREN. A forecast about the category landed on both alike, yet the market has spent half a year pricing them apart.

Prepayments Are What Would Break the Forecast

Gartner’s thesis rests on operators funding depreciating assets and waiting years for a return. The company behind Nebius stock has been building the opposite structure. Around 70% of its second-quarter deals carried customer prepayments, with management guiding to more than $9 billion of upfront funding in 2026, enough to cover 50% to 60% of the associated capital spending. Capital spending paid for in advance by the customer is far less exposed to the write-down Gartner describes.

The counterweight to that argument sits in the same set of quarterly accounts. Nebius reported second-quarter revenue up 454% to $584 million against depreciation and amortization of $259 million, which is 44% of revenue, and Michael Burry has argued the industry should depreciate GPUs over two to three years rather than six or more. Shorten the schedule and the Nebius stock payback math moves toward Gartner’s. Consensus for the 22 October print looks for a loss of $0.75 a share on revenue of about $904.8 million.

IREN carries a harder version of the same test, with less contracted revenue to show for it. The company is still pitching growth, with a proposed 900 megawatt Redbank campus in New South Wales targeting a 2029 grid connection at more than A$10 billion of capital spending, though the site sits outside its secured-power portfolio and has no transmission connection agreement. Its reported Anthropic cloud agreement remains unconfirmed by either company, which leaves the contracted revenue that would answer Gartner unproven.

The 22 October results are the first chance to test any of this with numbers rather than forecasts. Prepayment coverage and the depreciation schedule are the two lines that decide whether Nebius stock belongs in Gartner’s 80% or the 20% that stays independent, and a 2030 prediction leaves a long time for either case to be made.

Investor Takeaway

Nebius stock funding 50% to 60% of its 2026 capital spending through customer prepayments is the clearest available rebuttal to Gartner’s impairment thesis, because prepaid capacity carries far less write-down risk.
