AMC Entertainment CEO says one long-running entertainment debate is finally over

For six years, the entertainment industry has been locked in a debate that touched everything from studio strategy to real estate valuations to the future of a 106-year-old American institution. The question was simple and existential: did streaming permanently replace movie theaters?

July 20, AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box and answered it without hesitation.

I think we’ve won that fight.

That is Aron declaring that the years-long narrative about streaming killing theaters, accelerated by COVID and amplified by every analyst who predicted the permanent behavioral shift away from cinemas, has been settled. And he has the numbers to back it up.

AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc. (AMC), the largest movie theater chain in the world, reported its highest quarterly revenue in the company’s 106-year history on July 20. The stock is up 44.23% year-to-date, according to Yahoo Finance.

The AMC record quarter that gives Aron’s victory lap its credibility

The Q2 2026 results were not just good by AMC’s recent standards. They were records by any historical measure, according to the company’s earnings release.

  • Total revenues reached $1.597 billion, up 14.2% year over year
  • Adjusted EBITDA surged 69.6% to $321.4 million, the first time in AMC’s history the company crossed the $300 million mark in a single quarter.
  • Free cash flow was $190.1 million.
  • Cash on hand grew to $778.4 million, up 83.7% from a year ago.
  • Attendance rose 13.5% to 71.3 million guests.

“In our 106-year history, never before has AMC had such superb results,” Aron said in the earnings release.

The Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded from 13.6% a year ago to 20.1%, demonstrating the operating leverage that Aron has pointed to as the core investment case for AMC at rising revenue levels.

The first-half story reinforces the trajectory. Combined H1 2026 revenues of $2.642 billion were up 16.9% year over year. First-half Adjusted EBITDA of $359.7 million was more than two and a half times (up 172.9%) the $131.8 million in the same period of 2025.

Why the movie slate is the real driver and what it says about the streaming debate

The argument that theaters are dying always carried an implicit assumption: that studios would migrate their best content to streaming first, leaving cinemas with the scraps. Looks like that assumption is not holding.

Six different films opened to $75 million or more domestically in Q2 alone, from Universal, A24, Lionsgate, and three Disney titles, according to Aron’s CNBC interview.

Then on the weekend of Aron’s CNBC appearance, Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey opened to approximately $124 million domestically.

The domestic box office reached approximately $2.99 billion in Q2, up 10.7% year over year, making it the biggest box office quarter in seven years and the fifth biggest ever, according to Aron’s earnings commentary.

AMC’s domestic revenues grew even faster, up 13%, reflecting market share gains on top of industry recovery. European results were equally striking. AMC’s European attendance rose 17.9%, and Adjusted EBITDA climbed 336.7% in the quarter.

“Studio after studio is turning out movie after movie designed for the big screen,” Aron said on CNBC.

That is the fundamental rebuttal to the streaming replacement thesis: Hollywood has not abandoned theatrical releases as the primary commercial launch vehicle for its biggest titles. If anything, the evidence suggests studios are leaning back into it.

The honest counterargument AMC CEO is not saying out loud

I want to be fair to the data that sits alongside Aron’s victory declaration, because the picture is not entirely clean.

March 6, 2026 survey data from The Harvard Gazette is worth looking at. The percentage of Americans who frequently see films in theaters fell from 39% in 2019 to 17% in 2025. In a separate poll, 75% of Americans said they had recently chosen to stream at home instead of going to a theater.

AMC’s stock, despite the record quarter, is still down 36% over the past year and down 95% over three years, according to Yahoo Finance.

The company carries significant long-term debt accumulated through years of pandemic-era survival financing. Net loss in Q2 was $11.4 million on a GAAP basis despite the record EBITDA.

What Aron is winning is the argument about theaters as a cultural experience, not necessarily the argument about the frequency of universal moviegoing.

The people who go to theaters are going more enthusiastically and spending more when they get there. The people who have drifted to streaming have not fully come back.

My read of AMC‘s Q2 story is that Aron is right in the ways that matter most for investors: the business generates real cash when the content slate is strong, operating leverage is substantial, and the debt situation is improving.

Whether the behavioral audience loss to streaming is permanent or cyclical, I think it will take several more years to resolve fully. But for one quarter, in one company’s 106-year history, the movie theater won.
