Coinbase Restores Wallet Name as Self-Custodial App…

Why Is Coinbase Bringing Back the Wallet Name?

Coinbase is reversing last year’s Base App rebrand and restoring the Coinbase Wallet name as the self-custodial product shifts away from its earlier social ambitions and toward trading, multichain access and new onchain financial products.

The wallet now supports more than 10 networks, including Base, Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, Robinhood Chain and Monad. Robinhood Chain and Monad are among the newer additions as Coinbase broadens the app beyond its own Base ecosystem.

Coinbase says the Wallet name better reflects the product’s current role as a self-custodial entry point into a wider range of onchain markets. Ryan Kass, Head of Coinbase Wallet Product, described the app as a “test kitchen” for products and assets that may not initially be available through Coinbase’s centralized exchange.

The first example is perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid. The wallet also supports prediction markets and tokenized stocks, while Coinbase plans to continue adding networks and long-tail assets as they become available.

“The Coinbase Wallet name better captures the product’s role as Coinbase’s self-custodial front door to the ‘everything exchange,'” Kass said. “While Base app was an opinionated experiment, Coinbase Wallet gives users access to all of onchain finance.”

What Changed From the Base App Strategy?

Coinbase renamed Coinbase Wallet as the Base App in July 2025, presenting it as an “everything app” combining social networking, messaging, payments, mini-apps and trading.

That strategy did not develop as planned. CEO Brian Armstrong said in March that the social experiment “didn’t quite work,” while Base creator Jesse Pollak later acknowledged that some social and creator features had fallen short.

Leadership of the app was transferred to Jordan “Cobie” Fish in July as Coinbase moved toward a more trading-focused strategy. Pollak also said the product would become less Base-centric as it expanded into a broader trading platform.

The return to the Coinbase Wallet name therefore formalizes a pivot that had already been underway. Rather than trying to turn the wallet into a social platform built primarily around Base, Coinbase is positioning it as a multichain trading interface that can expose users to products earlier than its regulated centralized exchange.

Investor Takeaway

The rebrand is less about naming than product strategy. Coinbase is separating its self-custodial wallet from the failed social-app experiment and using it as a faster route into perpetuals, prediction markets, tokenized assets and newly launched chains.

How Far Is Coinbase Pushing Onchain Trading?

Coinbase is marketing the wallet around faster access to markets, saying users can download the app and begin trading without traditional account onboarding. Some products remain subject to geographic restrictions.

The wallet remains self-custodial, meaning users retain control of their private keys rather than holding assets directly with Coinbase. Assets can appear automatically once they are minted on supported chains, while the wallet attempts to detect and hide scam or malicious tokens.

New asset classes receive additional scrutiny. Coinbase said products such as prediction markets and tokenized stocks undergo product and compliance reviews before being added.

The company generates revenue from trading and product fees inside the wallet but has not disclosed more detail on the fee structure. It also declined to say whether the stronger emphasis on trading has increased user numbers.

The model gives Coinbase a way to expand its product range without requiring every asset or market to be listed immediately on its centralized exchange. That distinction could become more important as the company adds assets that are available onchain but face different regulatory or operational considerations on a custodial platform.

Does Base Still Matter to Coinbase Wallet?

Base remains central to the product despite the broader multichain strategy. Coinbase expects Base-based assets to continue appearing prominently in the wallet when they attract activity and trading interest.

The difference is that Base is no longer being treated as the app’s defining identity. Assets from the network will instead compete for attention alongside tokens and markets from Ethereum, Solana, Robinhood Chain, Monad and other supported ecosystems.

That could expand the wallet’s addressable market while reducing its dependence on the success of Base-specific consumer applications. It also gives Coinbase a more direct route into the growing competition among wallets, exchanges and trading interfaces seeking to aggregate onchain liquidity across multiple networks.

The strategic message is clear: Coinbase Wallet is becoming less of a companion application for one blockchain and more of a self-custodial trading layer for Coinbase’s wider product ambitions.
