Tesla (TSLA) Stock: $385 Thursday After Lagging the…

Updated 5 November 2026, 07:00 GMT (before the US open). Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) closed at $385.19 on Wednesday, down $13.31 or 3.34 percent, and slipped another 1.01 percent to $381.30 after hours (StockAnalysis). It fell on the day the Dow had its best session in 19 months, up 3.00 percent, and the S&P 500 rose 1.58 percent (Kitco, Investing.com). Investors are pricing the chance that a Democratic Congress steps up oversight of autonomous driving, of government contracts with Musk’s companies and of a possible SpaceX merger. Verdict: this is a political discount on a stock that still trades about 23 percent below its 52-week high; nothing in Tesla’s business changed on Wednesday. Reference levels: $350 below, $420 above.

Key facts

  • Price: $385.19 close on Wednesday 4 November; open $379.80, day range $375.50-$392.04, volume 47.8 million shares; after-hours $381.30 at 7:59 p.m. ET (StockAnalysis).
  • Pre-election: Tesla closed at $398.50 on Tuesday. It traded as low as $380.55 before the open on Wednesday, down 4.5 percent (Investing.com).
  • Versus the market: S&P 500 up 1.58 percent to 7,688.62, Dow up 3.00 percent to 53,356.12, Nasdaq up 1.44 percent (Kitco).
  • Valuation: market value about $1.52 trillion; trailing P/E 423, forward P/E 180 (StockAnalysis).
  • 52-week range: $297.38-$498.83.
  • Analysts: 44 analysts, average target $413.10, median $436, range $128.11-$600 (S&P Global data via StockAnalysis, 29 October).

Why Tesla lagged the rally

Democrats won control of the House and Senate, and several Republicans that Musk supported lost. Investing.com tied Tesla’s fall to three areas a Democratic Congress could examine: the safety rules for autonomous driving and planned robotaxi services, government contracts involving Musk’s companies, and his political activities. These are possibilities, not announced policy. Our desk report on Wednesday’s fall has the election detail.

Texas adds a local angle. Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa campaigned on a moratorium on data-centre construction, and Barclays analysts flagged the implications for the state (Investing.com). Tesla is headquartered in Austin.

Other pressures were already there. Investing.com and Yahoo Finance pointed to weaker Shanghai wholesale numbers after September’s record, and reported that Tesla’s chief financial officer had trimmed their personal stake by more than 9 percent.

The SpaceX merger question

Both companies have set up special committees to explore a closer relationship, but no agreement exists, and Investing.com describes the transaction as exploratory, citing Bloomberg’s report of an effort to announce a deal in the first half of next year. Barclays estimates that in an all-stock deal at current valuations Musk could hold about 56 percent of the votes in the combined company with about 37 percent of the shares, because of SpaceX’s super-voting stock.

XTB analyst Kathleen Brooks warned that a Democratic Congress could increase scrutiny of any deal, even though it could not block one directly (Dow Jones Newswires). Barclays itself is positive on the stock: as FinanceFeeds reported, it set a $450 target on the merger case in late October.

What analysts expect

Recent targets cluster above the current price: Bank of America’s Alexander Perry has a Buy and $460 (29 October), Cantor Fitzgerald’s Andres Sheppard a Buy and $485, RBC’s Tom Narayan a Buy and $480, and Deutsche Bank’s Edison Yu a Buy and $420. The main exception is Evercore ISI’s Chris McNally, with a Hold and $300 (StockAnalysis). Those notes came after the third-quarter results, which our Q3 page covered; none of them has yet priced in the election.

There is also some good operating news. Tesla registrations rose 248 percent in Sweden and 131 percent in Norway in October (FinanceFeeds desk report).

Tesla stock: bull, base and bear

Scenario TSLA What has to happen Anchor
Bear $350 Democratic leaders announce hearings on autonomous driving or Musk’s contracts, and the stock breaks Wednesday’s $375.50 low. The $350 level TradingKey flagged on Wednesday; about 9.1 percent below $385.19.
Base $375-$400 No concrete action from Congress, and the stock trades between Wednesday’s low and Tuesday’s close. Wednesday’s $375.50 low and the $398.50 pre-election close.
Bull $420 The political worry fades, the market rally broadens to Tesla, and merger or robotaxi news takes over. Deutsche Bank’s $420 target, close to the $413.10 consensus; about 9.0 percent above the close.

The bear case sits below Wednesday’s close. These are reference levels measured from the verified close, not forecasts.

What to watch

  • Thursday’s open: whether the $381.30 after-hours level holds or the stock tests Wednesday’s $375.50 low.
  • Statements from incoming committee chairs on autonomous vehicles or federal contracts.
  • Merger news: any update from the special committees on SpaceX.
  • Musk’s net worth, which moves with both companies; see our Elon Musk net worth page.
  • Friday’s US payrolls at 8:30 a.m. ET, which will move rate expectations and growth stocks.

Quick take: Tesla closed at $385.19, down 3.34 percent, on a day the Dow gained 3 percent, as investors priced Congressional oversight risk after the Democratic midterm win. Nothing in the business changed, and analysts’ average target is $413.10. Expect $375-$400 until Congress does something concrete; $350 needs hearings or a broken low, $420 needs the political worry to fade.
