What Would Batch V1.1 Change on the XRP Ledger?

Ripple says asset managers and other commercial projects are preparing to use a rebuilt XRP Ledger feature that can make several linked transactions settle together, as the amendment approaches possible activation on September 29.

Batch V1.1 allows as many as eight transactions to be bundled into a single operation. Its atomic mode makes execution all-or-nothing: every transaction in the group succeeds, or the entire batch fails.

That structure is particularly useful when two financial actions depend on each other. In delivery-versus-payment transactions, for example, an asset can move at the same time as the money used to purchase it, removing the risk that one leg settles while the other does not.

“We’ll be sharing more once the feature is live, including work with key asset managers,” Ayo Akinyele, head of engineering at RippleX, said.

“Batch allows multiple transactions to be grouped together so they either all execute or none do,” Akinyele said. “That is particularly important for use cases like delivery-versus-payment, where the asset and payment need to move atomically.”

The capability fits with Ripple’s growing focus on institutional tokenization. The company recently backed ZILO and Licuido as it expands infrastructure for tokenized financial assets, including systems designed around atomic settlement and institutional asset workflows.

Why Does Atomic Settlement Matter for Asset Managers?

The practical value of batching goes beyond reducing the number of separate transactions an application has to submit. It can make more complicated financial workflows behave like a single transaction.

An asset manager exchanging a tokenized security for payment, for example, would not have to accept the possibility that the security moves while the payment fails. Exchanges and marketplaces could similarly bundle a customer’s trade with a service charge rather than processing the fee through a separate transfer.

The XRP Ledger has already been used for institutional tokenized-asset settlement. In May, JPMorgan, Ripple, Mastercard and Ondo completed a cross-border tokenized Treasury pilot in which an OUSG redemption took place on XRPL before the cash leg moved through traditional banking infrastructure.

Batch V1.1 could move that model closer to true on-ledger atomic execution when both sides of a transaction can be represented within compatible infrastructure.

“Some projects are already being built with Batch in mind, so activation would allow that work to move closer to production,” Akinyele said. “We’ll share more on specific partners and launch timing as those plans are finalized.”

Investor Takeaway

Batch V1.1 matters less as a transaction-count feature than as financial plumbing. If asset managers use it for delivery-versus-payment and similar workflows, XRPL could handle linked asset and payment instructions as one operation rather than leaving institutions to coordinate separate settlement legs.

Why Was the Original Batch Upgrade Withdrawn?

The approaching activation follows a serious security problem in the original Batch implementation.

Researchers identified a critical flaw in Batch V1.0’s signature-validation process in February. Under specific conditions, validation could stop before every required signature had been checked, potentially allowing an attacker to insert a transaction originating from another account without that account owner’s authorization.

Validators were advised to withdraw support, and the affected amendment was disabled before it could activate. Developers subsequently rebuilt the feature as Batch V1.1, tightening authorization checks and subjecting the replacement implementation to additional security review.

The episode makes the validator process particularly relevant this time. XRPL amendments must maintain support from more than 80% of trusted validators for two weeks before they become active, rather than becoming available simply because developers release the code.

Will Batch V1.1 Activate on September 29?

The amendment had support from 30 of 35 tracked XRP Ledger validators when its activation countdown began on September 15 at 14:06:41 UTC. Twenty-eight votes are required to clear the 80% threshold.

If that level of support remains intact for the full 14-day period, Batch V1.1 is expected to activate shortly after the same time on September 29. The date remains conditional because validators can change their votes before activation.

The upgrade arrives as tokenized assets become a larger part of institutional blockchain development. The value of tokenized real-world assets across the industry surpassed $43 billion earlier this year, increasing pressure on blockchain networks to offer settlement tools that resemble the controls institutions already use in traditional markets.

For XRPL, the next test therefore comes after activation rather than at it. Ripple has said commercial projects and asset managers are already preparing around Batch, but has not yet named the institutions or provided production timelines. Their eventual use of the feature will show whether atomic batching becomes another protocol capability or a piece of infrastructure institutions actually use to settle tokenized assets.
